MARIA WOJDAT

PROFILE

Colours that are warm, vibrant and joyful. Forms that are chunky and bold with soft hollows and gently bellying curves.

My work is based on observations of our everyday interaction with ceramics in the home. I form the pieces by drawing on the similarities between ways of working with clay and cooking techniques. In particular I’ve been looking at the actions we make whepair of blue bowlsn using a pestle and mortar and I’ve developed techniques for making based on these actions. I use spontaneous, free movements to pound and grind, creating hollows and curves in solid spheres or thick slabs of clay.

The forms refer to the bowl, investigating its symbolism and exploring the nature of its containment. In display the pieces are often grouped, placed to emphasise a coming together or moving apart, supporting or standing alone, exploring the relationships between line, form and colour.

Living and working in Somerset, I initially trained and worked as a graphic designer but changed direction and graduated from the Masters Course in Ceramic Design at Bath Spa University College in 2007. I received the Crafts Council Development Award in 2008.
